Bending stress calculator & find bending moment

Introduction

Bending Stress Solver

The Bending Stress calculator is a free online engineering calculator that helps you analyze bending stress in beams using the Euler-Bernoulli Flexure Formula:

σ = M × c / I

This calculator is designed for mechanical engineers, civil engineers, structural designers, manufacturing engineers, and engineering students. It allows you to calculate any one unknown parameter by entering the remaining known values.

Unlike a standard bending stress calculator, this solver can determine:

  • Bending Stress (σ)
  • Bending Moment (M)
  • Distance to the Extreme Fiber (c)
  • Moment of Inertia (I)

For added convenience, the calculator can automatically determine the distance to the extreme fiber (c) and moment of inertia (I) from common cross-section shapes, eliminating the need for manual calculations.

It supports both Metric and Imperial units, performs automatic unit conversions, and includes a live stress distribution diagram to help visualize compression, tension, and the neutral axis across the beam section.

How to use bending stress calculator

Step 1 – Select the Parameter to Calculate

Choose the value you want to determine from the “I want to find” menu:

  • Bending Stress (σ)
  • Bending Moment (M)
  • Distance to the Extreme Fiber (c)
  • Moment of Inertia (I)

The calculator automatically updates the required input fields based on your selection.

Step 2 – Enter the Known Values

Enter all the remaining required values.

Depending on the selected calculation, you may need to provide:

  • Bending Stress
  • Bending Moment
  • Distance to the Extreme Fiber
  • Moment of Inertia

Select the appropriate unit for each value using the unit dropdown menus.
